Siemens presents innovative train fleets for the Central German S-Bahn
Today, Siemens Mobility unveiled the train models for the state-of-the-art S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland (Central German S-Bahn) regional fleet (MDSB2025plus) at the Wegberg-Wildenrath Test Centre. Consisting of 75 Mireo trains, including the innovative battery-powered Mireo Plus B, the new fleets will significantly strengthen public transport in the Leipzig region from December 2026. Awarded to Siemens Mobility in December 2023, the order is worth around 500 million euros and represents the largest order to date for the Mireo train platform. The operators have ordered the following vehicles in total: Länderbahn (DLB) has ordered 41 three-car Mireo trains; DB Regio AG has ordered 18 four-car Mireo trains and 16 two-car Mireo Plus B battery-powered trains; and ZVNL Schienenfahrzeug GmbH has ordered trains that will enable sustainable mobility on non-electrified lines.
Thomas Graetz, Head of Regional Trains and Commuter Rail at Siemens Mobility, emphasised the importance of the new train fleets for this network:
'From December 2026, these state-of-the-art Mireo trains, including the innovative battery-powered Mireo Plus B, will significantly enhance mobility in Central Germany. ZVNL, Länderbahn and DB Regio are thus focusing on greater capacity, flexibility and maximum passenger comfort. The order for a total of 75 state-of-the-art Mireo trains, placed in December 2023, is the largest single order for this train model in the history of Siemens Mobility. This order further strengthens the market position of the Mireo platform, with 23 fleets and over 550 trains already successfully delivered."
“The modernisation and expansion of the fleet is an important building block for the transport revolution and preserving the region's industrial location. This project is funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Free State of Saxony through the Investment Act for Coal Regions,’ says Kai Emanuel, chairman of the ZVNL association and district administrator of North Saxony.
Christine Singer, chairwoman of DB Regio South-East's regional management, says: “The S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland is the backbone of local transport in central Germany. It connects the region with the Leipzig/Halle conurbation. We are delighted to be putting these modern, comfortable and environmentally friendly vehicles into service. Only by offering attractive services will we and our partners in local public transport succeed in the mobility transition.’
The S3, S5 and S5x lines, which run between Halle and Leipzig and will be operated by Länderbahn in future, are characterised by particularly high passenger demand. Using Mireos, with their spacious interiors, is essential to ensuring we can provide reliable transport services and act as a sustainable mobility partner for the region,' emphasises Stephan Naue, Managing Director of Länderbahn GmbH.
The new trains
There are 100 seats in the two-car trains, 150 in the three-car trains, and 200 in the four-car trains. There are also spacious multi-purpose areas, additional bicycle storage and a separate first-class area with leather seats. Passenger comfort is enhanced by free Wi-Fi, a family area, barrier-free travel and a smooth ride. Numerous power sockets and USB ports ensure that batteries remain charged during the journey. In future, compatible smartphones will even be able to charge wirelessly at the four-seater tables. A real-time passenger information system will display current arrival and departure times, as well as connection options, at each stop. The vehicles will be fitted with a high-frequency window solution developed by Siemens Mobility which will significantly improve mobile phone reception in trains. The new vehicles have significantly more doors and more space than previous models in the MDSB2025plus network. This makes boarding and alighting more comfortable, reduces passenger changeover times, and improves timetable adherence.
Increased energy efficiency of up to 25 per cent (compared to similar capacity trains) and high reliability ensure climate-friendly mobility.
By choosing the Mireo train platform, which provides electric and battery-electric trains for the Central German S-Bahn network, ZVNL is setting a high standard for its ordered vehicles.
The MDSB network
This forward-looking fleet was jointly commissioned by a consortium of regional local rail transport authorities. The lead organisation is the Zweckverband für den Nahverkehrsraum Leipzig (ZVNL) is in charge of the project, in cooperation with Nahverkehrsservice Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH (NASA GmbH) on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Digital Affairs (MID) of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, the Saxon regional rail transport associations Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (ZVMS) and Öffentlicher Personennahverkehr Vogtland (ZVV) in Saxony, and the Thuringian Ministry of Infrastructure and Agriculture (TMIL). This cooperation underscores the joint commitment to improving regional transport infrastructure.
The trains will cover a total of 10.6 million train kilometres per year on the MDSB network. When operations are scheduled to commence in 2026, the vehicles will be used on the following lines:
4-car Mireo trains:
- S 4: Falkenberg – Torgau – Eilenburg – Taucha – Leipzig Hbf. (tief) – Wurzen – Oschatz

To date, Siemens Mobility has sold 23 Mireo fleets, comprising over 550 trains in total. Having travelled over 50 million kilometres so far, the fleet has proven to be highly reliable. In addition to overhead line trains, the Mireo platform offers battery-powered and hydrogen-powered trains, enabling climate-friendly mobility with an increased energy efficiency of up to 25 per cent compared to similar capacity trains. The vehicles are also up to 95 per cent recyclable. The latest development is the Mireo Smart, which is available to lease with a very short delivery time and at an attractive price, and which also offers alternative drive options.
