The state of Saxony-Anhalt, together with the shareholders and management of Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH (HSB), has secured the company's development prospects for the next two years. Important decisions were made based on the future strategy presented at the end of November, particularly regarding the company's future financial resources.

The existing transport contract, worth approximately 9 million € per year, will continue until 2027. Additionally, the state will support HSB GmbH with its ongoing operating and investment costs (approximately 7 million € per year). A further 4 million € per year will be provided to offset cost pressures.

"This will give HSB some breathing space and pave the way for developing a genuine long-term strategy," said Saxony-Anhalt's Transport Minister, Dr Lydia Hüskens, in Magdeburg today. 'We will do everything in our power to support the company in repositioning itself,' she emphasised. However, she added that the decisions made and financial commitments are expressly subject to various conditions.

According to the minister, the financial framework of recent years must not be exceeded during the term of the transport contract. In addition, HSB has agreed to develop various savings and restructuring concepts for the first half of 2026. Dr Hüskens confirmed that the company could count on the support of the state and NASA, as well as for applications for federal funding.

‘The talks took place in a constructive and trusting atmosphere. The results give HSB and its 280 employees a clear perspective for the next steps,' said Katrin Müller, managing director of Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH.

All feasibility studies and concepts must be reviewed and evaluated with the aim of securing adequate long-term financing. The financing plan will form the basis for beginning the desired conversion process as soon as possible.
