Following the expiry of the objection period for the unsuccessful bidders, DB Regio AG has officially been awarded the new transport contract for Elektronetz Nord Magdeburg (ENORM). The railroad company will operate the network beyond 2028 until December 2043. The new contract provides for an increase in capacity of up to 452 seats on the RE20 and RB40 lines, particularly on Fridays to Sundays. These and other requirements were part of the tender by the contracting authorities of the state of Saxony-Anhalt (NASA GmbH), Regionalverband Braunschweig, Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen mbH and the state of Brandenburg.

“The new award is associated with a whole series of improvements in regional transport,” said Saxony-Anhalt's Minister for Infrastructure and Digital Affairs, Dr. Lydia Hüskens, in Magdeburg today. “The new vehicles in particular will significantly increase the attractiveness of our local public transport services for passengers,” emphasized Hüskens.

According to the Minister, the S-Bahn service in the Magdeburg - Burg section will be extended to a 30-minute interval from Monday to Friday thanks to the new ENORM contract. Magdeburg and Zielitz are also connected by the hourly S-Bahn lines S2 and RB30, as well as Magdeburg and Schönebeck, at 30-minute intervals. The RB30 Halle (Saale) - Köthen - Magdeburg - Stendal - Wittenberge line enables new connections with fewer changes by running beyond Magdeburg to Wittenberge. The contract includes the option to extend the RB40 Braunschweig - Helmstedt - Magdeburg line to Dessau-Roßlau. Whether this option is used depends on the future development of the S-Bahn network around Magdeburg. The acceleration of the RE20 Magdeburg - Stendal - Uelzen will probably shorten the journey time by 15 minutes.

The contractual requirements for a high level of passenger comfort are implemented through free Wi-Fi, mobile phone-permeable windows, sockets at the seats, USB charging ports and an innovative lighting concept in the vehicle and on the doors. Accessibility, video recordings and passenger information screens are important principles for the interior design of the vehicles. The Mein Takt regional design will be visible on the outside of the trains. The new “Mireo” vehicles bought by DB Regio from the manufacturer Siemens take into account the constantly increasing demand for bicycle parking spaces. There will be 24 parking spaces in the three-car vehicles and 30 in the four-car vehicles. Both units together provide space for 54 bicycles. On the RB40 and RE20 lines, the use of three- and four-car vehicles running together is planned for Fridays to Sundays. However, a prerequisite for the joint use of the vehicles on the RE20 line is an extension of the platforms between Stendal and Uelzen. According to the current planning status of the infrastructure owner DB InfraGO, this is planned for 2030.

The ENORM network covers up to 8.4 million train kilometers per year, around 7.1 million of which are covered in Saxony-Anhalt. The network includes lines S1 (Schönebeck-Bad Salzelmen - Magdeburg Hbf - Burg (- Genthin), S2 (Magdeburg Hbf - Zielitz), RB30 (Halle (Saale) Hbf - Magdeburg Hbf - Wittenberge), RB40 (Braunschweig Hbf - Magdeburg Hbf), RE20 (Magdeburg Hbf - Stendal Hbf - Uelzen).

“Mobility means freedom. Freedom also includes a real choice of means of transport. We want people in our Saxony-Anhalt to be able to freely choose all forms of mobility. This requires well-developed infrastructure: cycle paths, roads and, of course, attractive public transport services. We are working on this. Every day,” concluded Lydia Hüskens. The new ENORM transport contract is a living example of this.
