Transport companies in Saxony-Anhalt carried around 179.1 million passengers in 2023

In 2023, regional rail and commercial bus transport companies based in Saxony-Anhalt carried 179.1 million passengers. According to the State Statistical Office, this was 1.6% more passengers than in the previous year. On average, around 0.5 million passengers were carried each day.

178.7 million passengers travelled on scheduled services ( regional and long-distance bus services and regional rail services) and 0.4 million passengers travelled on occasional bus services. The Saxony-Anhalt companies included in the survey transported passengers throughout Saxony-Anhalt, but also across the state borders in Thuringia, Saxony, Lower Saxony, Hesse, Brandenburg and Berlin.

The mileage of the companies in 2023 was 109.8 million vehicle-kilometres. The majority of vehicle-kilometres (97.1%) were covered by regular services and 2.9% by occasional services. The average distance travelled by regular services was 13.5 km. Passengers on occasional services travelled an average of 263.2 km.

The mode most used by passengers was the tram with a share of 47.7%, followed by the bus with 40.6% and the train with 11.7%. The values used for this calculation include all modes of transport used by a passenger during a trip with a company. This means that if the passenger changes to another mode of transport of a company during the trip, the passenger is counted again (intermodal trip).

The statistics are collected annually from larger companies that carried at least 250,000 passengers in the year of the last full survey (2019), as well as from all companies with commercial regional rail transport. For smaller companies, a random sample is taken from a maximum of 2,500 companies nationwide.
